The larger answer is a hybrid solution of human and AI working together but we’ll get to that….

Richard Glover encapsulated the essence of the difference in the Sydney Morning Herald on Feb 8, 2025;

Where the main difference still lies is that a human can still pick up business elements that AI cannot. An AI bot doesn’t go to your place of business nor has interactive chats about what you do so will be less likely to get the complete picture. It can only read what is given or attached in the prompt. Here are some more examples where a human wins out over AI.

  • If a rare product or service you offer is not listed on your website but uncovered through conversation, AI won’t know about that item.
  • If your profitability per product isn’t disclosed, then an AI campaign will market all products equally when almost all businesses will have higher profit products they prefer to sell.
  • Further miscellaneous elements like seasonality, stock levels, staffing levels, service area, client demographics etc will not be considered by AI unless that data was added in prompts.

Unless every single element of the business is clearly fed to the AI, an experienced marketing will still learn more about the business to utilise in the marketing.

On the plus side of AI, when the amount of data available is large and complex, AI will analyse and utilise this better than a human. For example using ecommerce sales data from the past 5 years to look for trends in time, product segment, buyer demographics etc will help AI make recommendations better than a human will. Also to analyse your website’s SEO compared to specific competitors, AI can give increasing insights and recommendations.
